PLDT Enterprise Enhances Mobile Security with Silent Authentication

The PLDT's corporate arm, PLDT Enterprise, is aiming to strengthen mobile security using Silent Authentication. This new technology's goal is to remove One-Time Passwords (OTPs) and passwords in the authentication processes providing clients with a secured and smoother online experience.

Silent Authentication leverages the extensive telco network of PLDT Enterprise and Smart Communications Inc. (Smart) to transform how e-commerce, banking, and other digital platforms manage verifications done by users. This move lines up with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) initiative in moving away from using OTPs that is vulnerable to frauds, scams, phishing, social engineering and middle-man attacks. BSP recognizes these flaws and urges financial institutions to improve their processes by using more advanced and secured authentication procedures.

With Silent Authentication, businesses can directly coordinate with the telco network for verification through an Application Programming Interface (API). This approach significantly reduces the risks associated with phishing and OTP-related scams, ensuring that users can access their accounts and conduct transactions safely.

John Gonzales, First Vice President and Head of Enterprise Consulting Services and Technology Management at PLDT Enterprise, emphasized the importance of this new technology in bolstering digital security. “Our exploration of Silent Authentication is a major advancement in our continued promise to provide innovative solutions that secure and enhance the digital experience for our customers. By offering a seamless and secure verification method, we empower businesses and individuals to engage in digital transactions with confidence and ease.

In the Philippines, where mobile-first transactions dominate the digital landscape, security concerns are more pressing than ever. Recent reports indicate that the country has the highest rate of e-shopping scams in Asia, with a 35.9% scam rate in online shopping. This is disturbing to say the least, and just shows how companies needs a highly effective digital security solution. Silent Authentication allows merchants' transaction authentications to directly link with Smart, which in turn lessening the risk of OTP phishing attacks and credential compromise.

Silent Authentication offers multiple benefits. First, it enhances the user experience by facilitating faster and more convenient transactions without the delays caused by traditional OTP systems. Second, it significantly strengthens fraud prevention, reducing vulnerabilities to cyber threats. Third, it provides versatility across industries, including banking and e-commerce, by offering a strong layer of security without compromising user convenience.

This initiative aligns with PLDT Enterprise’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by fostering a secure digital ecosystem that bridges the digital divide. By supporting the safe growth of digital transactions, this innovation empowers businesses and customers alike to engage in digital commerce with greater confidence.

PLDT Enterprise is poised to introduce more solutions that harness the power of telco data to enhance security and efficiency in the digital space.
