How to Spot and Protect Yourself from Credit Card Skimmers

We often think of cyber threats as something that only happens online, but did you know that scammers can steal your card information in the real world, too? Credit card skimmers are sneaky devices that criminals attach to ATMs or payment terminals to steal your card details. They can capture your card number, name, and expiration date—and to make things worse, scammers sometimes install tiny hidden cameras nearby to record your PIN as you enter it.

Once they have your information, they can use it for fraudulent transactions, leaving you with UNEXPECTED CHARGES or, in the worst cases, an EMPTIED BANK ACCOUNT! The good news? Outsmarting these culprits is easy if you know what to look for.

An effective way of saving yourself from these skimmers is using tap-to-pay in your transactions which is a lot safer than swiping or inserting your cards. If tap isn’t available, inserting your card’s chip is the next best option. Swiping with the magnetic stripe is the least secure because it’s easier for scammers to steal your data that way.

There are different types of skimmers out there. Some sit on top of real card readers, blending in so well that they’re hard to spot. Others are hidden inside the machine, completely out of sight. Some even send stolen data wirelessly to scammers via Bluetooth, so they never have to come back to retrieve the device. Then there are fake keypads that capture your PIN and full-on fake card readers designed to trick you into using them.

To protect yourself, always check the card reader before inserting your card. If the slot looks misaligned or sticks out more than usual, try wiggling it. If you notice that it is movable, it most probably a skimmer. Also, take a look around for small holes or tiny cameras pointed at the keypad. If anything seems off, don’t take the risk—use a different machine.

Report immediately once you suspect the ATM you are using is a skimmer. If you think your card has been skimmed, contact your bank right away to freeze your account and prevent unauthorized transactions.

Being extra careful with your card might seem like a hassle, but it’s worth it to keep your money and personal information safe. Stay alert, trust your instincts, and always double-check before inserting your card.
