Marcos Pushes for Starlink Internet in Philippine Schools to Boost Education

 President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced a plan to bring satellite-based internet to all public schools in the Philippines using Starlink. The goal is to improve education, especially in remote areas where internet access is limited or nonexistent. This initiative aims to close the digital gap and make online learning tools available to students and teachers across the country.

During the national launch of the Department of Education’s “Brigada Eskwela” program at Tibagan Elementary School in San Miguel, Bulacan, Marcos shared his vision for better teaching and learning through technology. “Brigada Eskwela” is a volunteer effort where teachers, parents, students, businesses, and community members prepare schools for the new academic year, starting June 16. Marcos highlighted how Starlink’s satellite internet can provide reliable Wi-Fi to schools, even in far-off places where traditional internet services like cables or cell towers are not practical.

Starlink, a satellite internet service, is easy to set up. Marcos explained that schools can simply plug in the equipment to get Wi-Fi, making it a practical solution for rural areas. This technology is a game-changer for schools struggling with slow or no internet, enabling access to digital resources that enhance education.

Beyond internet access, Marcos emphasized supporting teachers in other ways. He promised to reduce their administrative tasks, like excessive paperwork, so they can focus on teaching. “You became teachers to teach, not to do bookkeeping,” he said, addressing long-standing concerns from teachers’ groups about overwhelming clerical work. Education Secretary Sonny Angara is leading efforts to lighten these burdens, allowing teachers to prioritize classroom instruction and student mentoring.

Marcos also committed to providing financial support and retraining programs to help teachers improve their skills. He called teachers the “true heroes” of the nation, recognizing their dedication and the sleepless nights they spend preparing to educate their students.

This push for better internet and teacher support reflects the government’s broader goal of improving public school conditions. By bringing reliable Wi-Fi to schools and easing teachers’ workloads, the Philippines aims to create a stronger, more inclusive education system for all students, no matter where they live.
