YouTube’s New “Hype” Feature Gives Small Creators a Big Chance to Shine

YouTube is rolling out a new tool that could change the way smaller creators get noticed. The platform has officially launched “Hype,” a feature designed to help fans boost their favorite videos and give up-and-coming channels more visibility on the platform.

This was teased on last year on Google's Made On YouTube event. Hype is now available on select countries including U.S., U.K., Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and India. The release here in the Philippines is not yet clear as of the moment. Different from the Like button, Hype gives a fan the power to support their favored content creators by giving them the capability to highlight videos they know deserves more attention.

Here’s how it works: fans can hype up to three videos per week from creators with fewer than 500,000 subscribers. Each hype adds points to a video, pushing it up a special leaderboard found in YouTube’s Explore section. To make the system fairer, YouTube gives smaller channels an extra boost—the fewer subscribers a creator has, the more powerful each hype becomes.

Videos that gain enough momentum will display a “Hyped” badge, and viewers can even filter their feed to show only hyped content. To keep engagement fun, fans also earn monthly “Hype Star” badges for consistently supporting creators, and YouTube will notify them whenever a video they hyped is close to climbing the leaderboard.

While this move is a big win for small creators, it also opens up new business opportunities for YouTube. They confirmed that paid hypes are still in testing, specifically in Brazil and Turkey, which allows viewers to purchase more hypes to help their favorite creators and videos. In the near future, YouTube plans to expand the feature with category-specific leaderboards for niches like gaming and fashion, and even allow fans to share when they’ve hyped a video to spread the word faster.

For creators, tracking this new metric is simple. The YouTube Studio app now includes a dedicated Hype card, letting them monitor hype points and see recaps in their weekly analytics.

At its core, Hype is more than just another button—it’s a way for passionate viewers to feel involved in a creator’s journey, while giving small channels a real shot at breaking through in a crowded platform. This is for all the fans that would like to actively support their favorite creators, not just watch content.
